About the Library - Borrowing

Borrowing basics

  • You must have you current AUT ID card with you to borrow items
  • Borrow items at the self-issue machines, or the Lending Desks
  • Return items to a returns slot at any of the campus Lending Desks or after hours return slots
  • Return Short Loan items to the Short Loan returns area
  • Login to My Account check your borrowed items, renew items and see your requests
  • Items can be recalled by others. You will be sent an email to your AUT email address with the new due date.

Borrowing times

Undergraduate

Books: 14 days (20 items max)

Renewals: 5

Journals: cannot be borrowed

DVDs: 3 days

Postgraduate

Books: 28 days (50 items max)

Renewals: 6

Journals: 3 days

DVDs: 3 days

Distance Undergraduate

Books: 21 days (20 items max)

Renewals: 3

Journals: cannot be borrowed

DVDs: 7 days (includes postage time)

Distance Postgraduate

Books: 28 days (50 items max)

Renewals: 6

Journals: cannot be borrowed

DVDs: 7 days (includes postage time)

AUT staff

Books: 28 days (50 items max)

Renewals: 12

Journals: 3 days

DVDs: 14 days

Short Loan items

2 hour loan: 2 items only

Short Loan DVDs: 3 hours

Renewals: one renewal online via My Account (if not required by another user) or renew at the Lending Desk


3 day loan: as marked on spine
Renewals: 5 (if not required by another user)

Bonus+ items

  • Books: 21 days (5 items max undergraduate, 10 items max postgraduate and staff)
  • Renewals: 1
  • Overdue fines: $2.00 for the first day, then $0.50 per day up to the maximum of $15.00.

Recalled items

Recalled items change the due date and are subject to fines if returned late. Recall notices are sent to your AUT email address. Text messages can be sent if set up. A loan period of 7 days from date of borrowing or renewal is guaranteed for Main Collection items.

Replacement Charges

  • Very overdue items are regarded as Lost and you are billed for replacement costs
  • Replacement charges are mitigated on return of items

Loss of borrowing privileges

  • Item limit reached
  • 1 overdue recalled item
  • Fines of $10.00+
  • Invalid ID status
  • Lost items

You are responsible for

  • Items you borrow
  • Returning items by their due date
  • Replacement charges for lost or damaged items (Note: failure to pay may result in academic results being withheld and/or the loss of Library borrowing privileges)
  • Fines for overdue items (Note: failure to pay may result in academic results being withheld and/or the loss of Library borrowing privileges)
  • Reporting your lost AUT ID card to Library staff immediately to avoid costs for unauthorised use

Reciprocal borrowing

As an AUT student or staff member you are eligible to borrow books in person from other ULANZ New Zealand and Australian University Libraries for free. The University of Auckland is not part of this agreement. To become as reciprocal borrower apply directly at the university you wish to borrow from.
