Drop-ins for assessment advice

The Libraries are closed at the moment, but you can still chat online with an academic writing advisor. Drop-ins for assessment advice are available:

  • Monday to Friday (except on public holidays)
  • 1pm-3pm

During busy periods, drop-ins are limited to 15 minutes per student twice per semester (not more than once per week).

What you can expect at drop-ins

  • General advice on strategies that will help to improve your writing and useful assessment skills
  • Recommendations to online resources or workshops relevant to you
  • Referrals to other student services and people.

What is not covered at drop-ins

Academic writing advisors do not proofread or check student writing. This is in accordance with AUT’s proofreading guidelines for student assessments and the guidelines for the proofreading of postgraduate theses and dissertations.

How to drop in online

For you to have the best experience during online drop-ins, there are a couple of things to do.

Get set up first

You will require a computer with:

  • A current version of Google Chrome (Other browsers can be used but Chrome is recommended)

If you’re using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra for the first time (or using it on a particular device for the first time), you will be taken through audio and video set up when you join the session. This is easy to follow.

Raise your hand when you arrive

Click on the ‘raise hand’ button to let us know that you have joined the drop-in. You may need to wait a few minutes if we’re busy.

An academic writing advisor will be available between 1pm and 3pm from Monday to Friday (except on public holidays).
